Job Summary:

Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) research involves conducting interdisciplinary oceanographic and atmospheric investigations in support of ongoing efforts in the areas of seasonal to interannual climate forecasts; prediction and assessment of decadal to centennial environmental change; building sustainable U.S. fisheries; advancing short-term warnings and forecast services, etc. The work of this senior-level engineer serves the overall goals of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and PMEL and must possess thorough knowledge of traditional engineering and machine shop practices and capabilities, as well as emerging additive manufacturing techniques.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Manage multiple projects, make decisions independently on technical problems, requiring project and people management skills and high-level expertise.
  • Works closely with the PMEL machine shop to ensure timely delivery of components of the highest quality.
  • Assembles and tests prototypes with the assistance of technicians and generates complete assembly documents.
  • Practices the highest standards of documentation to ensure the future support of technology.
  • Program and operate numerically controlled machine tools, (Hass VF2 and TM1 vertical milling machines and a Haas TL2 lathe), determine material requirements, possess engineering and mathematical skills for manufacturing issues, and demonstrate the ability to inspect parts using CMM.
  • Must possess broad experience in the mechanical engineering field and the ability to use manually operated machine tools, (especially lathes), familiarity with MasterCam, and the ability to read blueprints to produce quality parts with minimal supervision with tight tolerances in engineering plastics and metals.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must possess thorough knowledge of traditional engineering and machine shop practices and capabilities, as well as emerging additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an R&D environment.
  • This position requires at least a two-year degree in engineering and machine technology with emphasis on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) tool operation.
  • Solidworks CAD and MasterCAM experience and welding skills are a plus.
  • Ability to learn new skills, display enthusiasm for our quality products.
  • Minimum of 3 years of welding experience.
  • Completion of a welding apprenticeship.

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday through Friday, normal business hours.
  • Seattle, WA.
  • On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures.
