Job Title: Machinist Welder/Engineer Technician

Job Summary:

The work of this senior-level engineer serves the overall goals of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The ideal candidate will possess thorough knowledge of traditional engineering and machine shop practices and capabilities, as well as emerging additive manufacturing techniques.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Managing multiple projects and making decisions independently on technical problems
  • Working closely with the PMEL machine shop to ensure timely delivery of components of the highest quality
  • Assembling and testing prototypes with the assistance of technicians
  • Generating complete assembly documents
  • Practicing accurate documentation to ensure the future support of technology
  • Programming and operating numerically controlled machine tools
  • Determining material requirements for projects

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of traditional engineering and machine shop practices and capabilities, as well as emerging additive manufacturing techniques
  • At least 3 years of experience in an R&D environment
  • At least a two-year degree in engineering and machine technology with emphasis on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) tool operation
  • Experience programing and operating numerically controlled machine tools, (Hass VF2 and TM1 vertical milling machines and a Haas TL2 lathe)
  • Experience in Solidworks CAD and Mastercam and document management experience
  • Ability to learn new skills and enthusiasm for quality products
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures/techniques on aluminum, stainless steel, steel (TIG, MIG, plasma cutting etc.)
  • At least 3 years of welding experience
  • Project and people management skills
  • Knowledge of Mastercam for programming
  • Experienced with tig welding


  • Completion of a welding apprenticeship is desirable

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday - Friday, normal business hours
  • Work is to be performed at NOAA's facilities in Seattle, WA
  • On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures.
