Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to provide advanced archiving and program management support for the Library of Congress.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Research secondary sources to fill in significant gaps in the available information relating to the subject.
  • Possess critical judgment in the analysis of the materials to ensure their authenticity and relevance to the central theme or themes involved in the assignment.
  • Conduct projects that require skills in the assessment, arrangement, and description of records so as to provide an objective, comprehensive picture of the historical subjects and significant events under consideration.
  • Direct archives arrangement and description project according to the standard principles and practices of the field.
  • Maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively with Library staff.
  • Identify preservation concerns and perform basic preservation duties such as rehousing and photocopying as needed.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Graduate degree in library, archives, or museum studies is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a supervisor in the field.
  • Exhibit advanced knowledge and implementation of recognized archival standards (MARC, DACS, EAD, etc.) as well as experience working with various types of archival materials typically found in large collections, including textual materials, photographs, born-digital, and audio and moving image media.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience working in a library or archives environment performing similar tasks.
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of archival work, including analysis, organization, and description of archival material.
  • Knowledge of American history, culture, documentary studies, oral history and/or other related subject areas and research sources to process and describe archival collections.

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7 am and 6 pm.
  • Work will be performed at Library of Congress facilities located in Washington, DC, or Cabin Branch, MD.
