Job Summary:

The purpose of the position is to provide communication and technical writing support to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Draft content that articulates, interprets, and explains important, complex, and potentially controversial NSF science programs and research findings.
  • Develop public affairs audience- or issues-driven communication strategies, media engagement strategies, digital engagement strategies, and delivery methods.
  • Plan, draft, and develop communications products, plans, and engagement strategies to address a variety of complex scientific research topics.
  • Write/edit articles, agreements, white papers, web content, research news, and other publications related to science topics of interest to a variety of stakeholders, translating concepts and ideas into clear language.
  • Conduct research through interviews with subject-matter specialists and other research methods to write and edit content for a variety of communications channels, including print, web, and digital.
  • Provide expertise in measuring attitudes and actions among the public and use findings to improve, refine and enhance campaigns and other deliverables.
  • Collaborate with scientists and OLPA personnel in the preparation and review of social media and web content and provide technical writing guidance and feedback.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, or other similar degree. Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Master's Degree in English, Professional/Technical Writing, or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in technical writing, scientific writing, or professional writing distilling complex, technical subjects into Plain Language for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Experience with Associated Press (AP) style conforming with at least 3 years of using Plain Language standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.).
  • Experience in Scientific Field is preferred.

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Normal business hours Monday - Friday.
  • Hybrid in person and telework. Must be able to work on-site in NSF Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia
